Jim Morrison, the enigmatic frontman of The Doors, is renowned for his poetic lyrics and electrifying stage presence. However, his artistic pursuits extended beyond music into the realm of filmmaking. The Jim Morrison Film Festival, held on March 27, 1970, in Vancouver, Canada, celebrated this lesser-known facet of his creativity.

Organized by Poppin Magazine’s Ihor Todoruk and Hank Zevallos, the festival took place at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and the Orpheum Theatre. The centerpiece was the world premiere of Morrison’s avant-garde film HWY: An American Pastoral, a surreal journey through the American landscape that Morrison both directed and starred in. Although Morrison was unable to attend due to legal obligations in Phoenix, his cinematic voice resonated through the screenings.
